How Hankettes started & Who we are today: Hankettes
was formed in 1996 in Vancouver, BC, Canada. As a major allergy
sufferer, its founder Lesley Roberts was looking for an alternative to
paper tissue, as well as a business she could run from home. The first
product she came up with was organic cotton hankies that pull out of a
box like standard paper tissue. It's the perfect allergy product, and is great for people with multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) as well. Over the years the product line
continues to grow, always with the idea of replacing standard
disposable products with reusable organic cotton ones.
In
2001, Lesley, her husband Rob, their 2 kids, and the business moved to
the countryside of B.C.’s beautiful Sunshine Coast. The business is now
located on their co-op acreage. In 2002, Amanda joined Hankettes and soon began managing the business. Currently, we have two other regular part time staff, plus 2 others on call. Lesley
is now primarily focused on sales and marketing for Hankettes and The
Good Life Collective, our sister Sales, Marketing & Distribution
Company.
How we manufacture:
Hankettes imports the majority of its fabric from an organic cotton growers co-operative located in Texas. The rest of it comes from North Carolina. Most of our notions come from a small business in New Mexico. Once
the fabric is here, we cut, sew, silk screen, package, and ship right
from our workshop. Items to be dyed are first cut and sewn, then
sent to a friend in our village who dyes them in small batches outside
in her yard. Final drying and ironing are done in
her kitchen. We generally have good inventory of all of our fabrics and notions. We pride ourselves in shipping out orders in a timely manner. Hankettes
offers a very flexible work environment where everyone sets their own
hours, and parents are welcome to bring their children. Even dogs
sometimes come, but stay outside or in the office area.
